Shining Stars Sampler Quilt Pattern by Jeni Baker

Six star blocks, each made twice at two different sizes, sashed out so they float across a solid background.

The sampler format is doing real work here. Between the six blocks you will use flying geese, half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles and more, which makes this an unusually efficient way to build technique. You are not drilling one skill across a whole quilt. You are learning six things and ending up with something you want to keep.

The floating layout is the other reason this quilt works. Blocks get sashed to a common size and then turned and rearranged, so the stars sit at different scales across a large field of solid. That open background is also an invitation to a quilter, whether that is you or someone with a longarm.

Print requirements are modest, just twelve fat eighths, so this is genuinely a scrap-friendly project. If you have been collecting small cuts without a plan for them, this is the plan.
