Criss Cross uses a full jelly roll against a light background, with the strips arranged into interlocking crosses. The structure gives you a lot of visual interest from very little cutting, which means the fabric does the work and you get to spend your time sewing rather than measuring.

April Rosenthal wrote it as a quilt about her grandmother, who would sit each grandchild down one at a time and talk quietly with them about their world and their goals, hold their hand, and tell them she was proud of them. The pattern is meant to hold onto those quiet words and kisses on the cheek. Worth knowing if you are making it as a gift, because it gives you something to say in the card.

Finished quilt measures 55" x 66", a generous throw.

  • 40 jelly roll strips, 2 1/2" x 42"
  • 2 1/4 yards background fabric
  • 5/8 yard binding
  • 4 yards backing
  • 63" x 74" batting
